1 billion plastic bottles are discarded every year in Brazil. The lubricating oil contained in 1 discarded bottle is enough to contaminate 2 thousand litres of water. Of all this volume, only 9% is recycled. Many of those in the recycling business will do this using water, which may create two major problems: First, it is difficult to remove all the oil from plastic, which results in a low-quality recycled raw material, decreasing its value. Second, this water has to be treated, and during the process, each litre of oil turns into up to 8 pounds of hazardous waste, generating a high cost and environmental risk.
