Over 3.8 million Ugandans do not have pit latrines, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This, coupled with the lack of pit emptying services in Uganda, has forced many people to abandon their filled-up latrines and resort to open defecation which has contributed to the increase in water and sanitation-related diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera. UNICEF data has further revealed that over 23,000 Ugandans are dying every year of which 17,000 are children under the age of five as a result of poor sanitation. FMB LTD believes that emptying the filled-up household latrines in time ensures quality interventions that address the primary needs of refugees and host communities when their latrines filled up. Its predominant technology is called gulper, a sewage sludge pump based on a simple hand pump design. It’s affordable and portable technology. The foot value on the pump is based on a value type commonly used in low-cost water pumps. The pump is operated by moving the handle on top of the machine up and down.
